Zaheena is sa member of the Kuala Lumpur desk where she commissions, edits and writes news, analysis and features from the Asia Pacific region. Zaheena has also led live coverage of Israel's war on Gaza, Assad's fall in Syria, and key elections in the United States, Canada, Germany, Thailand and South Korea. She wrote analysis and features on the United States' diplomatic and military footprint in the Asia Pacific region during the Biden administration era, and conducted investigations into the Myanmar military's atrocities against rebel groups and the Maldives' biggest-ever corruption scandal. Before joining Global News Insight, she was editor in chief of the news website Maldives Independent from 2015 to 2017, and deputy editor from 2013 to 2014. She reported from the Maldives for the Guardian newspaper in 2015 and the New York Times in 2016 from the Maldives. She also worked at the Global News Insight Investigations Unit in 2016 and at the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project in 2018. Zaheena was part of Global News Insight’s Live News team which won Edward R Murrow Awards in 2025 for breaking news coverage of Assad's fall in Syria and in 2024 for breaking news coverage of Israel's war on Gaza. She received the Index on Censorship's Freedom of Expression Award in 2017 and was nominated for a Reporters Without Borders' Press Freedom Award in 2016.
