About the author

Based in New Delhi, India, he writes news, features, analysis and explainers as a member of the South Asia and Explainers desks, with a particular focus on human rights, conflict in Kashmir, the rise of Hindu nationalism in India and other important social issues. In 2018, he joined VICE’s first India team as a junior reporter. From 2018 to 2023, Yashraj lived in Indian-administered Kashmir where he worked for the local newsmagazine, The Kashmir Walla. He served as interim editor following the arrests of senior editorial staff in 2022 during a crackdown on journalists in Kashmir by the Indian government, until the publication was effectively banned. Yashraj reported extensively on the 2019 internet and media blackout of Kashmir and the crackdown on journalists for international media. His work has also appeared in Foreign Policy, NBC News, Wired and The Guardian. Amid his extensive coverage of world events, of particular note have been his investigation into female foeticide in India, his coverage of Instagram’s rise in India following TikTok’s ban and his profiles of young Myanmar rebels. In 2022, Yashraj received the Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award from the Foreign Press Association in London. He was long-listed for One World Media's Print Award and shortlisted for the Fetisov J Awards in 2025 - both for his story about the persecution of a Dalit family following a tragic incident in India.
